Face The Facts: Save the Starving

Nearly one billion people all over the world are suffering from a lack of food as I write this. It is a problem that people need to be aware of and which needs to be tackled. It is something that we should be specifically aware of now as, food prices rocket not just for us, but for people all over the world, who were already struggling just to afford basic food supplies.

To highlight this massive problem, Oxfam held a photo shoot in Westminister to coincide with World Food Day on 16th October 2008 and recruited various volunteers from all over the country to feature in it. They asked each one to don a white mask and a black-t-shirt so as to produce a really poignant image. As you will see, those at the front wore t-shirts spelling out the number of hungry and starving across the world, which shocklingly totals 967 million people. It is hard to comprehend, but that's nearly a billion people all over the world starving and suffering, in need of something we in England have. It's a harsh reality but one we need to acknowledge.

If you want to make a difference, there is loads of ways you can help. As Nathalie Brook, Economic Justice Campaigner for Oxfam and organiser of the photo shoot says: 'Without the help of volunteers, supporters and activists, much of Oxfam's work towards overcoming poverty and suffering around the world would be impossible. By getting involved with Oxfam, in whichever way you can, you'll be making a difference to the lives of those living in poverty.' It is most defnintely worth mentioning that doing something doesn't necessarily mean devoting hours of your time, maybe it could just be to sign this petition, that will be sent to World Leaders to draw attention to this awful problem. It will take five minutes but it will help. Head to http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/ca ... risis.html to put your name on it.
